i am a turkish citizen with a valid US visa (I am a legal US resident ) and a schengen visa. I know I won’t need a visa for airport transit but I am not sure about the train??? how strict are the swiss with their borders?

Backpacking thru EU: Suggestions on footwear?

Hubby and I will be packing it thru Europe (London, Paris, Switz, Italy, Austria, Germany) in Aug traveling via trains and staying in B&Bs recommended by Rick Steves. I wanted to see what recommendations for shoes/footwear you could give us both. Either one or two pairs ea. that are light and serve double duty: heavy duty for lots of walking and packing, plus appropriate for dressing down in shorts and up with khakis (for him) and skirts (for me) when we need to be more appropriate (esp. in churches in Italy and an occassional opera or play).

My feet get very tired and painful walking around in my running shoes for more than a few hours. My sandals are all short-distance pairs/heels other than some old Tevas. Add a pack and I can imagine the pain on my feet and lower back. Any suggestions?

We pack pretty light and are ok fitness wise (ie not carrying any “extra baggage” that might be a prob. with the pain). We’re REI members so we have that access too. Thanks for your help
