Travelling to Europe in mid september,2006?

We plan to spend 3 days in Paris and 4 days around France. Could anyone suggest inexpensive lodging in Paris and around interesting places in France.Since this is my first trip outside the US,if anybody with experience suggest some important pointers such as must see places around France and how to get to difference points and accomodations that would be really helpful.
Also does it make sense to visit Venice only!
Thanks in Advance
